We decided to take advantage of the perfect summer weather by hiking a mountain. Mount Takao is about an hour outside of Tokyo. It wasn't really mountain climbing since it's less than 2000 feet high, and we took a lift up half of it. But sometimes even walking downhill with our kids feels a lot like scaling a mountain face, so I was still proud of us for reaching the top. At the summit we got some shave ice and ice-cream to share, except there was no sharing since my kids scarfed it all down themselves, which is one of my most vivid memories from this day, since all I really wanted was a lick of chocolate/vanilla twist after carrying Lyla in the summer heat.
The other very important event of the day was when Jonathan dropped his phone off the lift just as an announcement came on warning people to keep their phones and cameras inside their bags to protect from dropping them. Oops. The phone easily fell 100 feet as it clanged against a metal pillar supporting the lift line on the way down. I was certain that an unprotected iPhone had no chance of survival under those conditions. But as is true so often with Jonathan, not only was he undeservingly lucky enough to find someone to hike down the mountain to look for it, the phone was actually found, and without even a scratch.
